JMI Revises Compartment Exam Rules for Final-Year Students

Jamia Millia Islamia has revised its examination rules to help eligible final-year students clear pending backlog papers without waiting for the next regular examination cycle.
Under the amended provisions, students in their final semester—or final year in programmes following the annual system—can apply for a compartment examination after completing their last regular examination.
The rule covers backlog papers from previous semesters or academic years. However, it applies only to eligible students enrolled in regular programmes at the university.
What Has Changed in the JMI Examination Rules?
Previously, students with pending papers could face a longer wait before receiving another opportunity to complete their degree requirements.
The revised JMI compartment exam rules create a special exception for students reaching the end of their programmes. Eligible candidates can now apply to clear backlog papers through a compartment examination conducted after the final annual or semester-end examinations.
The Office of the Controller of Examinations will announce the dates separately. Therefore, students should regularly check official university notices instead of assuming that the examination will take place immediately after their final paper.
Who Can Apply for the Compartment Examination?
The revised provision applies to:
Students studying in the final semester of a semester-based programme
Final-year students enrolled in programmes following the annual system
Eligible students with backlog papers from an earlier semester or year
Students enrolled in regular JMI programmes
Students must satisfy the conditions prescribed for their respective programmes. The availability of this provision does not automatically register every eligible student for the examination.
Candidates will need to follow the application procedure and schedule announced by the Controller of Examinations.
Are Distance Education Students Eligible?
No. Students enrolled in distance-mode programmes are not covered by this compartment examination provision.
Clause 24.5 of Ordinance 15 states that there is no provision for compartment examinations in programmes or courses offered through distance mode.
Therefore, the amended facility is limited to eligible students studying in regular programmes at Jamia Millia Islamia.
How Does the Carry-Over System Affect the Rule?
Under Clause 24.4 of Ordinance 15, compartment examinations are generally not conducted for programmes operating under the carry-over system.
A carry-over system allows students to move forward in a programme while completing certain pending papers according to the applicable academic rules.
The amendment creates an exception for final-semester and final-year students. These candidates may apply for a compartment examination to clear backlog papers from any semester or year of their JMI programme, subject to the university’s conditions.
Changes to the Re-evaluation Process
Jamia Millia Islamia has also revised the rules governing the re-evaluation of answer scripts.
The updated Clause 23.1 allows final-year students to apply directly for a compartment examination. Other eligible students in annual-based programmes can apply for re-evaluation within 15 days from the date their marksheet is issued.
The ordinance also states that re-evaluation is generally unavailable for semester-based examinations unless another provision specifically permits it.
Re-evaluation is not permitted for:
Practical examinations
Viva voce examinations
Project reports
Fieldwork
Sessional or internal assessments
Dissertations
Papers already fully assessed by joint examiners or a board of examiners
Students should carefully distinguish between re-evaluation, retotalling and a compartment examination because each serves a different purpose.
Re-evaluation, Retotalling and Compartment Exams Explained
Re-evaluation
Re-evaluation involves having an eligible written answer script assessed again under the university’s rules. It is mainly available for annual-based examinations and is subject to prescribed conditions.
Retotalling
Retotalling checks whether the marks awarded in different parts of an answer script were added correctly. It does not involve reassessing the quality of the answers.
Applications for retotalling must generally be submitted within 15 days of the publication of the result, along with the prescribed fee.
Compartment examination
A compartment examination gives an eligible student another opportunity to pass a pending paper. Under the revised rule, qualifying final-semester or final-year students can apply after completing their last regular annual or semester-end examination.
Why Is the Rule Important for Final-Year Students?
A backlog paper can delay the completion of a degree even when a student has completed the rest of the programme. Such a delay may also affect applications for higher education or employment.
The revised provision gives eligible final-year students an earlier opportunity to meet their remaining academic requirements.
However, appearing in the compartment examination does not guarantee that a student will pass or receive a degree immediately. The student must clear the required paper and satisfy all other academic conditions of the programme.
What Eligible Students Should Do
Final-year students with backlog papers should:
Check whether their programme follows the semester or annual system.
Confirm that they are enrolled in a regular programme.
Identify all pending papers from previous semesters or years.
Monitor notices issued by the Controller of Examinations.
Check the application deadline and prescribed fee.
Read the programme-specific examination rules.
Retain a copy of the submitted application and payment receipt.
Prepare according to the syllabus applicable to the paper.
The ordinance states that the syllabus will be the one prescribed for the semester or year in which the student reappears for the examination.
Compartment Examination Schedule
JMI has not provided one permanent examination date under this provision. The Office of the Controller of Examinations will release the relevant dates separately.
